Designing and building a custom home is a complex and often overwhelming process. Canadian Timberframes is dedicated to making this journey as seamless as possible. With decades of experience and a comprehensive approach, we transform your vision into reality with efficiency, ensuring quality at every step.
1. Initial Consultation and Conceptual Design
At Canadian Timberframes, our process starts with a personalized consultation to understand your unique needs and preferences. Whether we collaborate with your architect, want to take advantage of our customizable timber frame designs, or prefer an introduction to one of our trusted industry partners, we’re here to guide the design process. We’ll ensure it captures your vision while addressing critical factors like site conditions and budget. You can rely on us to support the design process from start to finish, tailoring it to your specific goals.
2. Schematic Design
Schematic design is the first phase of turning your vision into a tangible plan. This phase produces rough drawings of a site plan, floor plans, elevations, and illustrative sketches or computer renderings. These early sketches ensure alignment with your vision and provide a foundation for detailed planning.
During this step, we are able to work closely with you or your architects to determine the project requirements and goals. We start with rough drawings that illustrate the basic concepts of your timber frame design, including spatial relationships, basic scale, and desired forms. Initial cost estimations are investigated based on the total project size and complexity.

3. Detailed Design Development and Construction Documents
After the schematic design phase, we transition to design development, which takes the results from the schematic design one step further. This phase involves timber frame development and pre-engineering, focusing on finalizing the design and specifying critical details such as materials, window and door locations, and general structural elements.
Design development yields more detailed site plans, floor plans, elevations, and section drawings with full dimensions. Our in-house team uses state-of-the-art software to create these detailed drawings and 3D models, guiding builders and ensuring clarity throughout the building process. These precise documents serve as the foundation for Construction Documents (CDs).
CDs are detailed drawings and specifications that finalize every creative design and structural element of the project. These documents comprehensively outline the design, materials, methods, and standards to be followed during construction. Once finalized, Construction Documents are typically submitted to the local building authority to obtain the required building permits, demonstrating compliance with all applicable codes and regulations—a prerequisite for beginning construction.
4. Material Manufacturing and Delivery
Between the detailed design development and starting the CDs, Canadian Timberframes will issue a production release to begin the manufacturing of your prefabricated timber frame. This will act as a final client sign-off for everything needed to start manufacturing your new timber home. The signoff includes but is not limited to: timber finish, stain colour selection, finalized design concept, and all contract revisions for the project.
We provide a complete range of material packages tailored to meet your specific needs, from timber frames to comprehensive lock-up packages. Every component is packaged properly, numbered, and delivered ready for easy on-site installation. Our team remains available to guide builders and answer any questions, streamlining the project's success through to completion.
High-Quality, Sustainable Materials
Canadian Timberframes is committed to using the finest materials available, offering a comprehensive range of timber frame packages, including wall systems and roof enclosures, to meet diverse needs. Our primary material, Douglas Fir, is carefully selected for its inherent structural qualities and aesthetic appeal. Sustainability is integral to our process, with timber sourced from responsibly managed local forests. Our proximity to these forest stands allows us to deliver high-quality, locally sourced Douglas Fir, reinforcing our commitment to both quality and environmental responsibility.
Expertise and End-to-End Service
Canadian Timberframes brings decades of expertise to the table, providing a seamless experience from concept to completion. Our comprehensive approach includes collaborating closely with clients, architects, builders and engineers to develop designs that are both beautiful and practical. This collaboration ensures that every detail aligns with the client's vision and site-specific requirements.
In-House Design and Manufacturing
Our in-house design team uses advanced software to create detailed drawings and 3D models, helping clients visualize their space and ensuring transparency. Having the design team in-house ensures that timber details are practical for installation and allows us to refine designs based on years of experience, leading to better quality, precision, and efficiency in both fabrication and installation.
Delivery and Ongoing Support
Our commitment goes beyond simply delivering materials to the construction site. Canadian Timberframes provides ongoing support to builders, ensuring any questions are promptly answered and that the project progresses smoothly. Before your package arrives, our team can arrange a collaborative call with builders to review details and the installation sequence, highlighting the exact placement of each piece and its included fasteners. For added convenience, these models can be provided as an accessible file via a web browser for on-site checks.
This dedication to comprehensive service and our willingness to assist through to project completion have fostered lasting relationships with builders and architects, reinforcing our reputation for reliability and excellence.
